The yatra will formally begin from this day and first of all the doors of Yamunotri and Gangotri temples will be opened for the visitors.

Uttarakhand, also known as Devbhoomi or the land of the Gods, is home to numerous temples and welcomes devotees throughout the year. Among the countless religious places and pilgrimage routes visited by devotees in Uttarakhand, one of the major ones is the Char Dham Yatra. This yatra or pilgrimage is a journey to four holy places located in the heights of the Himalayas – Yamunatri, Gangotri, Kedarnath and Badrinath. In Hindi, “char” means four, and “dham” means religious sites.

These pilgrimage sites located in the mountain ranges remain closed for about six months every year, opening in summer (April or May) and closing with the onset of winter (October or November). It is believed that the Char Dham Yatra should be completed in a clockwise direction. Hence, the pilgrimage starts from Yamunatri, goes to Kedarnath via Gangotri and finally ends at Badrinath. This journey can be completed by road or air (helicopter services are available). Some devotees also undertake the Do Dham Yatra, i.e. pilgrimage to both Kedarnath and Badrinath shrines.

Yamunatri Temple, located in a narrow valley near the source of the Yamuna River (India’s second holiest river after the Ganges) in Uttarkashi district, is dedicated to Goddess Yamuna. Uttarkashi district also houses the Gangotri Temple dedicated to Goddess Ganga, one of the holiest rivers in India. Kedarnath Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva is located in Rudraprayag district.
