Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw directed senior officials during a review meeting at Rail Bhawan to guarantee a completely smooth shift without disrupting daily passenger services. Engineers rebuilt the ticketing platform using advanced technology to expand server capacity and handle the growing daily online demand efficiently and effectively.
For thousands of travelers traveling through busy regional hubs like the East Coast Railway zone in Odisha, this upgrade promises faster ticket processing during major regional festival rushes like Rath Yatra. Digital platforms now process approximately 88 percent of all ticketing requests nationwide, leaving physical reservations counters much less crowded than before. This shift marks a clear departure from traditional manual booking methods.
RailOne mobile application growth
Travelers have quickly adopted the newly launched RailOne mobile application, pushing total downloads past 3.5 crore within a single year. Commuters consistently employ this application to book and cancel tickets, monitor live train running status, and locate coach positions from their smartphones. Users book roughly 9.29 lakh tickets every day through this interface, seamlessly blending both reserved and unreserved travel options in one place.
Machine learning predicts waitlists
Developers successfully integrated smart technology into the new platform to estimate waitlist confirmation probabilities with noteworthy precision. This smart technological feature improved its forecast accuracy rate from 53 percent to 94 percent recently, helping millions of daily commuters plan their trips better. Passengers now gain much better clarity regarding their actual travel status long before they need to finalize alternate travel arrangements.
Continued passenger subsidies
Authorities continue to maintain affordable travel costs across the country despite introducing these modern technological innovations. Official records show that the central government provided passenger fare subsidies totaling Rs 60,239 crore during the last financial year alone. This financial support essentially translates to an average discount of 43 percent on each individual train ticket bought across the vast network. Regular passengers will soon benefit from both highly economic fares and a much smarter, efficient booking infrastructure.

A MODERN UPGRADE FOR A 40-YEAR-OLD SYSTEM
The current Passenger Booking System was introduced in 1986 and has received only limited upgrades over the years. The new system has been rebuilt using modern technology and comes with much higher capacity to handle growing demand for online train ticket booking.
Indian Railways began internet-based ticketing in 2002, and today most passengers prefer booking tickets online rather than visiting reservation counters.
Around 88 per cent of ticket bookings now happen through digital platforms.
RAILONE APP SEES RAPID GROWTH
The transition is part of Indian Railways’ broader digital push. The RailwayOne app, launched in July 2025, has crossed 3.5 crore downloads in less than a year.
The app allows travelers to book and cancel tickets, check train running status, access platform and coach information, raise complaints and use other railway services from a single platform.
AI HELPS PASSENGERS TRACK CONFIRMATION CHANCES
One of the most talked-about features is AI-based waitlist prediction. Introduced earlier this year, the tool estimates the chances of a waiting listed ticket getting confirmed.
According to the Railways, prediction accuracy has improved from 53 percent to 94 percent, making it easier for passengers to plan their journeys.
With the upgraded Passenger Reservation System set to go live from August, Indian Railways hopes to make train ticket booking faster, smarter and more reliable for millions of travelers across the country.
Railways says about 9.29 lakh tickets are booked every day through the app. This includes around 7.2 lakh unreserved tickets and 2.09 lakh reserved tickets.
