Australia captain Mitchell Marsh said the short turnaround from the Big Bash League (BBL) final to the T20I series against Pakistan will not affect his team’s preparedness.

Marsh and seven other players in the squad featured in the BBL final on Sunday and arrived in Lahore around 24 hours before the first T20I, which begins on Thursday. Marsh said the tight schedule is not a concern, with the focus firmly on the upcoming tri-series and preparation for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, which begins on February 7.

“I think one of the things about our group and most international teams is that preparation can look different for every tour,” Marsh told the media ahead of the opening match.

“The majority of the group have been preparing in Dubai; other guys have been preparing by playing games throughout the Big Bash. We’re ready to go, and we’re looking ahead to a great series,” he added.
Marsh also addressed the absence of five senior players — Pat Cummins, Josh Hazelwood, Tim David, Nathan Ellis and Glenn Maxwell — who are missing the Pakistan series as they continue to work on their fitness. He confirmed that all five will link up with the squad in Sri Lanka, where Australia will begin their T20 World Cup campaign.

“This tour is really important for our World Cup preparations, and we’ve got some guys that weren’t quite ready to be here; they’re back at home training and preparing to meet us in Sri Lanka, so no stress there from our end,” Marsh said.

Pakistan and Australia are up against each other in the 1st T20I of the three-match series which serves as a warm-up for both the teams before the T20 World Cup that starts February 7. The first match of the series takes place January 29 at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore where all the games of the series will be organized. Pakistan are attempting a change in approach with respect to their T20I side but they have still trusted Babar Azam to score big. Australia, meantime, have rested a lot of their big names for this series and that leaves them in a vulnerable position. Follow live scores and updates from the PAK v AUS 1st T20I here.

Pakistan and Australia begin their final preparations ahead of the upcoming T20 World Cup as the two sides go up against each other in a three-match T20I series at Lahore’s Gaddaif Stadium. This is the final series for both the sides before they both go to Sri Lanka for the T20 World Cup that starts February 7.

Australia are among the favorites to win the T20 Word Cup whereas Pakistan are considered as one of the dark horses who can emerge as one of the leading teams if things go right for them.

Babar Azam returns for Pakistan

Pakistan have recalled Babar Azam into their T20I squad after the senior batsman had been kept out in the shortest format. Azam went through a lean patch during the recent Big Bash League where he had a dreadful tournament before he left ahead of the knockout games. Pakistan are hoping that Azam will find form in this series before the T20 World Cup.

Led by Salman Ali Agha, Pakistan have opted for a rather younger team and also dropped the express pacer Haris Rauf who had a good time in the BBL.

Australia, meantime, land in Pakistan with a largely second string side and a lot of big names missing. Travis Head is leading the Australian side for the opening match of the series as regular captain Mitchell Marsh has chosen to take rest for the series opener. None of their leading pacers are in the squad as they have all been given rest with an eye on fitness for the World Cup.
