Manchester United vs Manchester City 2-0: Premier League
Manchester United beats Manchester City 2–0
Manchester United beats Manchester City 2–0 as the new Michael Carrick era got off to a sensational start at Old Trafford. In a game which was played to the tempo United set, goals from Bryan Mbeumo and Patrick Dorgu saw United grab a deserved win in the derby.
With every other Premier League game still to commencement, it pulled Manchester United to fourth in the standings. Man City, meanwhile, remain six points behind table toppers Arsenal and now have an anxious wait to see if Arsenal can push that lead to nine points after their match versus Nottingham Forest.
United scored their opener on the counter – a City freekick cleared by Harry Maguire saw Bruno Fernandes feed Mbeumo onto a 4-v-2 counter, and United’s top scorer made no mistake with a lash to the bottom far corner. The second came after a spell of patient possession, and he wriggled past Nico O’Reilly to whip in a cross across the face of the goal, where a lax City defense didn’t see Dorgu ghost in and smash it in.
After the match, Guardiola said that “the better team won” and that City simply didn’t control the game.
What a win for Manchester United

This was an incredible display from United. If the score had been double what you see now, it would not have flattered them. Maguire missed from a yard, Casemiro saw one saved from two, Amad hit the post and they had three goals ruled out for marginal (albeit correct) offside calls.
Instructed to play on the shoulders of the City defense, United did just that and boy did it work. In the middle, Mainoo and Casemiro had the game locked down, while Martinez and Maguire were impregnable at the back. Bruno ran the show in the Bruno role, as everyone in the world bar Amorim knew he would.
Sensational stuff for the home side. Not so much for the away side, who now risk seeing Arsenal open up a nine point lead atop the league tonight.
Thanks for reading along, that’s that for this blog. Toodle-ooo!
A transformed Manchester United kicked off interim manager Michael Carrick’s second stint in charge with an exhilarating 2–0 derby day defeat of Manchester City in the Premier League at a vibrant Old Trafford.
Carrick’s attack-minded side swept away the gloom hanging over the club with second-half goals by Bryan Mbeumo and Patrick Dorgu underlining their dominance of a disappointing City whose title hopes suffered a crushing blow.

‘It was a really bad performance from us’
Manchester City’s Bernardo Silva spoke with Sky Sports: “They deserved to win today.
“They had more energy and intention. It always felt like they were close to score and we were never there.”
“We gave them what they want. They took the game to where they are good and we are not so good.
Manchester City conceded more ground in the Premier League title race as they went down with a whimper in Saturday’s 2–0 defeat to local rivals Manchester United. Erling Haaland failed to lay a glove on the home side’s defence, whilst an inspired Gianluigi Donnarumma kept the scoreline respectable. This was one of City’s worst performances of the season, with Pep Guardiola’s side left hoping that leaders Arsenal will slip up at Nottingham Forest later in the day.
City were on the back foot from the off, a fact not helped by injuries to John Stones, Josko Gvardiol, and Ruben Dias. Before they can confirm Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi’s arrival, the visitors fielded a backline with two 21-year-olds and a 20-year-old, and it showed when Harry Maguire’s early header hit the bar from close range before Patrick Dorgu forced a good save out of Donnarumma.
City were also obliged to the offside flag on two occasions in the first half when goals from Amad Diallo and Bruno Fernandes were chalked off, but the regularity with which United were getting in behind was cause for alarm for the away fans.
After a very sloppy and underwhelming first half, City improved ever so lightly after the break, but had it not been for Donnarumma making a flurry of quickfire saves from Amad and Casemiro, the game could have been over. The Italian came to the rescue again to beat out Mbeumo’s effort, but the Cameroon international finally beat the ex-Paris Saint-Germain star with a smart finish on the counter-attack in the 65th minute.
From there, City were running ragged, and in the 76th minute, it was 2–0 when Dorgu pickpocketed Rico Lewis to stab home. Amad almost scored a wondergoal, only for his strike to hit the post and then United had a third goal ruled out for offside from Mason Mount, but it mattered little. City could fall nine points behind Arsenal if the Gunners win at Forest after this capitulation.

Kobbie Mainoo has been handed his first Premier League begin of the season by Manchester United interim boss Michael Carrick for the visit of Manchester City on Saturday.
Mainoo, despite a good start to his United and England career, had largely been cast aside by Ruben Amorim — with his only appearance in the starting XI coming in a Carabao Cup defeat in September.
The 20-year-old’s half brother was even photographed wearing a T-shirt which read “Free Kobbie Mainoo” last month.

But after Amorim’s sacking, Mainoo has been given the nod in midfield for the Manchester Derby, which represented Carrick’s first game back in charge as interim boss.
Bryan Mbeumo also returns to the starting lineup following a spell away with Cameroon at the Africa Cup of Nations.
