The Thackeray cousins, who reunited after two decades ahead of Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections, are behind the ruling alliance in Mumbai.

Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena-UBT is leading in 29 wards and Raj Thackeray-led Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) is ahead in just 2 wards.

On the other hand, the BJP is leading in 42 of the 227 wards, while Shiv Sena, lead by Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, is leading in 13 wards.

On this India Today special report, NCP (Ajit Pawar faction) spokesperson Avinash Adik discusses the emerging trends in the Maharashtra local body elections, particularly focusing on Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad. Addressing the BJP’s lead in these traditional strongholds, Adik states, ‘We will have to really revisit and have some serious introspection as to what has happened.’ He acknowledges that the current numbers are ‘discomforting’ but suggests waiting for final results from other wards, including Mumbai. The discussion highlights the friction within the coalition, where local-level corruption allegations were traded between the BJP and NCP. Adik maintains that despite these local results, the stability of the NDA coalition and state governance remains unaffected. He further defends Ajit Pawar’s leadership, citing his ‘24/7’ work ethic in contrast to the Thackerays, while admitting the need to understand grassroots shifts where the BJP appears to be gaining ground.

The results for the BMC election are likely to get delayed on Friday (January 16, 2026). Polling for 227 wards took place across Mumbai on January 15. Mumbaikars voted on the 10,231 voting booths and cast their ballots to choose from the 1700 candidates in the fray. The delay is being attributed to a change in the counting system to be followed.

What was the earlier counting system?

Previously, each Returning Officer of the BMC would take up the counting to all corporator wards under her/his jurisdiction. This led to the results of all the corporator wards under the RO being announced at the same time.

MUMBAI:

Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut on Friday highlighted serious issues with the ongoing civic elections in Mumbai, citing missing voter names and dysfunctioning voting machines.
Speaking to the media, Raut said, “The voting pattern that has been going on in a city like Mumbai is a serious matter. Names of thousands of people, who have even voted in the Assembly elections, are missing in areas where Shiv Sena (UBT), MNS or Congress. The EVM machine does not work properly. The Election Commission is not ready to listen to us.”

Maharashtra elections result 2026 Updates:

The counting of votes for elections to 29 municipal corporations in Maharashtra has commenced, and early trends have favored the BJP-led Mahayuti in at least 250 of the 2,869 seats, several TV channels showed on Friday morning. In Mumbai’s Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), there appears to be a close contest between the BJP and the Uddhav Sena. The state’s 2,869 seats across 893 wards went to polls on January 15, and results are to be announced today.

Some of the key municipal corporations to watch are Mumbai, Pune, Thane, Pimpri-Chinchwad, Kalyan-Dombivli, Mira-Bhayandar, Ulhasnagar and Navi Mumbai, amongst others.

The elections have attracted significant attention this time due to shifting political alliances, with former allies splitting and rivals joining hands for the contest. The once-estranged Thackeray cousins, Raj and Uddhav, who ended their rivalry last June, have united for the civic body elections in Maharashtra. Meanwhile, Maharashtra deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar is also contesting with Sharad Pawar’s NCP faction in two seats—Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad.
