David, Cummins, Hazelwood in Australia’s provisional squad for T20 World Cup

Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood and Tim David, all on comeback trails from injury, have been named in Australia’s preparatory squad for theT20 World Cup.

Cummins, who is recovering from a back injury and featured only in the third Ashes Test in Adelaide, is set to undertake a scan later this month that will determine his availability for the final squad. However, chairman of selectors George Bailey said Cummins, along with Hazlewood and David, were “tracking well” in their recoveries and expressed confidence that all three would be fit in time for the tournament.

David endured a grade-two hamstring injury during a Big Bash League match on Boxing Day, while Hazlewood missed the Ashes with Achilles soreness following a hamstring injury.

“The T20 side has enjoyed a long run of recent success which enabled the panel to choose a balance of players across the variety of conditions Sri Lanka and India may present,” said Bailey.

“Pat Cummins, Josh Hazelwood and Tim David are tracking well and we are confident they will be available for the World Cup.

“This is a preliminary squad so should changes need to be made they will be ahead of the support period.”

The squad is otherwise spin-heavy for the tournament, which will be co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka. Australia will play its Group B matches in Colombo and Pallekele.

Michelle Marsh will captain the side once again, with Cameron Green and Cooper Connolly returning to the squad after missing the T20Is against India earlier in the summer. Josh Inglis is the sole wicketkeeper selected.

Mitchell Owen and Ben Dwarshuis miss out on selection.

Australia’s squad for the three-match T20I series against Pakistan, which precipitates the World Cup, will be announced at a later date.

Allrounder Cooper Connolly has been included in Australia’s squad for the T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka beginning next month, with Mitchell Owen and Ben Dwarshuis missing out.

Connolly, the left-hand batter and left-arm spinner, did not feature in the series against South Africa, New Zealand or India last year and has only featured in six T20Is – batting just twice in those games and claiming one wicket – but has started the BBL for Perth Scorchers impressively with 170 runs at a strike rate of 166.66 and five wickets with an economy of 7.62. He provides the squad with another spin option alongside Adam Zampa, Matt Kuhnemann and Glenn Maxwell.

Australia flagged by head coach Andrew McDonald earlier in the week, Pat Cummins has been included albeit his participation will rest on a scan at the end of January to assess his back after he made a single appearance during the ongoing Ashes.

Josh Hazlewood, who has missed the entire Ashes with hamstring and Achilles injuries, is also included pending his full recovery, as is Tim David, whose BBL has been finished by a hamstring injury.

Left-arm seamer Dwarshuis, who plays for Sydney Sixers, is a significant exclusion as it means that with the T20I retirement of Mitchell Starc and injury to Spencer Johnson, there is no left-arm pace option in the squad. Xavier Bartlett has taken the final pace-bowling slot.

Dwarshuis had put together a strong run of performances in the West Indies previously this year and then against South Africa before picking up a calf injury during the series against New Zealand, which restricted his participation in the series against India.

However,

although not currently in the squad, he would likely be a frontrunner to be called up should Cummins or Hazlewood not recover. The provisional squad can be freely amended until the start of the support period in early February. Sean Abbott would be another one in the mix if pace-bowling reserves were needed.

Owen, the Hobart Hurricanes and Tasmania allrounder, is the other noteworthy omission having debuted in the West Indies and playing 13 matches last year. However, after making 50, 36 not out and 37 in his first four innings he did not pass 14 in his next five knocks and has started the BBL poorly.

The selectors have opted not to include a second wicketkeeper in the 15-man squad, which leaves them at risk of needing an emergency stand-in option if Josh Inglis suffers a problem close to a game. Maxwell has previously been on standby to fill the role when there hasn’t been another specialist wicketkeeper available.

Alex Carey and Josh Philippe were both options to be included but their absence opens up a spot for another player who may be more likely to make the XI.

Australia’s World Cup

Australia’s World Cup campaign begins on February 11 against Ireland followed by further group matches against Zimbabwe, Sri Lanka and Oman with all four games taking place in Sri Lanka.

Australia will play three T20is in Pakistan in late January as preparation for the World Cup. A squad for those matches will be named at a later day.
