British heavyweight boxer Anthony Joshua was involved in a car crash in Nigeria that killed two people, local newspaper Punch reported.
Anthony Joshua,
Anthony Joshua, the Nigerian-British boxer and former world heavyweight champion, was involved in a car crash that killed two other passengers in Nigeria on Monday. The Lagos state commissioner for information, Gbenga Omotoso, confirmed the accident in a post on Local media reports say the boxer has been transferred to a hospital.
According to a statement by Olusegun Ogungbemide, spokesman for the Federal Road Safety Corps, preliminary investigations indicate the vehicle “to be traveling beyond the legally prescribed speed limit on the corridor, lost control during an overtaking maneuver and crashed into a stationary truck well packed by the side of the road.”
Photos on social media show the boxer being extricated from a wrecked vehicle while he was winced in pain.
The accident occurred on a major thoroughfare linking Ogun state, a nearby city, to Lagos, the country’s economic centre.
“Anthony Joshua is in an undisclosed hospital being treated for his injuries,” Lanre Ogunlowo, the commissioner of police for Ogun state, told the AP. He said he has no further information on the injuries.
Nigeria is the birthplace of Joshua’s parents and where he briefly went to boarding school at the age of 11.
Joshua had recently beaten YouTuber-turned-boxer Jake Paul nine days ago in a bout in Miami, which he was using to regain sharpness in the ring ahead of an effort to reclaim the world heavyweight title, which he lost in 2021 to Oleksandr Usyk.
He has been in talks to fight fellow Briton Tyson Fury in 2026.
Anthony Joshua‘s car accident comes shortly after his heavyweight victory over YouTube star Jake Paul on 19 December.
Joshua, who had been out of the ring since defeated by Daniel Dubois in September 2024, broke Paul’s jaw in two places during the six-round victory in Miami.
The fight earned the 36-year-old Briton a share of a reported £210m prize.
The bout, streamed on Netflix, was criticized by some – given Paul was a relative novice, and smaller than Joshua.

Joshua said he was “not concerned” about the integrity of the fight and the “whole point of it” was to “create conversation”.
British heavyweight boxer Anthony Joshua was injured in a car accident in Nigeria on Monday morning that killed two people, local police said.
The former world heavyweight boxing champion was taken to an undisclosed hospital after his car hit a stationery vehicle at around 11am on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, Ogun state police commissioner Lanre Ogunlowo said. The driver of Joshua’s vehicle was also injured, he added.
It’s still sketchy for us here. We are trying to establish all the facts from the first responders and that is the most we can say…We will be giving details as we have updates,” Ogunlowo explained.
Ogun police command said in a statement: “The vehicle transporting Mr Joshua, a Lexus SUC, was involved in the accident under circumstances that are currently being investigated. Joshua, seated in the rear of the vehicle, sustained minor injuries and is receiving medical attention with another injured person.
“Tragically, two other passengers in the vehicle lost their lives at the scene. The deceased have been conveyed to Livewell Hospital Morgue, Sagamu. The Ogun State Police Command extends heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased and assures the public that a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the accident has commenced.”
A video shared by local news outlet Punch appears to show Joshua sitting in the back left seat of a damaged car. A second video showed him walking slowly and getting into a police vehicle. A photo shared by the outlet appeared to be of a second, damaged vehicle, a truck covered in tarpaulin.
Joshua is the son of British-Nigerian parents and has family ties in the town of Sagamu, about 30 miles North of Nigeria’s commercial capital Lagos. Police said the crash took place on the north-bound Ibadan side of the highway, close to the junction to Sagamu.

The 36-year-old attended a boarding school in Ikenne, 53 miles from the accident site, before returning to Britain aged 12.
On December 20, he knocked out YouTuber Jake Paul in the sixth round of a boxing match streamed live on Netflix, after a 15-month break from the sport. He was expected to fight Tyson Fury, another former world heavyweight champion, fellow Briton and longtime rival, next year.
Earlier on Monday morning, Anthony Joshua had posted a video of himself playing table tennis on his Instagram stories, without revealing a location.
Joshua’s management team in the UK said they had been incapable of reaching the boxer.

After inheriting the newspaper, Scott abandoned all financial benefit – bar his salary – in the Guardian (worth £1m at the time and around £62m today) and passed ownership over to the newly formed Scott Trust. The Trust would evolve to have one key mission: to secure the financial and editorial independence of the Guardian in perpetuity.
That means the Guardian can’t be purchased. Not by private equity, not by a conglomerate, and definitely not by a billionaire seeking a political mouthpiece.
