NEW DELHI:
Smriti Mandhana scored 80 and Shafali Verma made 79 as India posted their highest Women’s T20I total of 221 for two in the fourth match against Sri Lanka on Sunday.
After batting second in each of the first three matches of the five-game series, India were asked to bat first this time. Mandhana and Shafali dominated the Sri Lanka bowlers at the Greenfield International Stadium and set the tone for a bigger total.

Towards the end of the innings, Richa Ghosh hit an unbeaten 40 off 16 balls, while captain Harmanpreet Kaur scored 16 not out from nine deliveries to take India past 220.
Mandhana and Shafali added 162 runs for the opening wicket in 15.2 overs. This is now the highest partnership for any wicket for India in women’s T20Is.
This was also the fourth time the pair crossed the 100-run mark together. They went past their previous best stand of 143 against West Indies at Gros Island in 2019.
Toss Sri Lanka chose to bowl vs India
Sri Lanka captain Chamari Athapatthu won the toss for the first time in this series and decided to bowl against India in the fourth T20I in Thiruvananthapuram. India have already sealed the five-match series 3-0.
Both teams made two changes to the XIs that appeared in the third T20I in Visakhapatnam. Sri Lanka brought in seamer Kawya Kavindi and all-rounder Rashmika Sewwandi in place of left-arm spinner Inoka Ranaweera and seamer Malki Madara. Athapaththu, playing in her 150th T20I for Sri Lanka, felt that “chasing is a bit easier because of the dew” and that 140 would be a good score to restrict India to.
Meanwhile, there was a forced change for the hosts, with No. 3 Jemimah Rodrigues unavailable for selection “due to weakness emerging from mild fever”, and Harleen Deol replacing her. Kranti Gaud, who had played the first three games, was rested, and Arundhati Reddy returned to the XI after missing the third T20I.
Harmanpreet Kaur admitted that India had also wanted to bat first, but said the team did not have any specific target in mind and that “hopefully, we set a good total”.
India: 1 Smriti Mandhana, 2 Shafali Verma, 3 Harleen Deol, 4 Harmanpreet Kaur (capt.), 5 Richa Ghosh (wk), 6 Dipti Sharma, 7 Amanjot Kaur, 8 Renuka Singh, 9 Arundhati Reddy, 10 Vaishnavi Sharma, 11 Shree Charani
Sri Lanka: 1 Chamari Athapaththu (capt.), 2 Hasini Perera, 3 Harshitha Samarawickrama, 4 Imesha Dulani, 5 Nilakshika Silva, 6 Kaushini Nuthyangana (wk), 7 Kavisha Dilhari, 8 Rashmika Sewwandi, 9 Kawya Kavindi, 10 Malsha Snehani, 11 Nimasha Meepage.
India Women (IND-W) vs Sri Lanka Women (SL-W) 4th T20I Live Cricket Score Updates: Smriti Mandhana (80 off 48), Shafali Verma (79 off 46) and Richa Ghosh (40 off 16) propelled India to 221/2—their best ever score in a T20I after they were asked to bat first by Sri Lanka after losing the toss.

Harmanpreet Kaur’s India lost their first toss of the tour and Chamari Athapaththu’s Sri Lanka had no hesitation in batting first. With the series already in the bag, India have made two changes to the side for the 4th T20I at the The Greenfield International Stadium in Thiruvananthapuram on Sunday: Jemimah Rodrigues is out due to fever while Kranti Gaud has been rested. In their place come Harleen Deol and Arundhati Reddy.
Shafali Verma has been in a superb knock in the series, and she was well complimented with the bowlers early on. In the third T20I, Harmanpreet Kaur too chipped in with a cameo, getting amidst the runs. With the ball, Renuka Singh Thakur was the pick of the bowlers in the previous T20I.
Sri Lanka, on the other hand, will seek to rescue something out of the series by winning at least one of the two remaining games. Although they have given glimpses of what they can do in the series from time to time, they have not delivered something substantial in the series.
MISSED CHANCE?
Vaishani Sharma’s spin almost gets India a second wicket after she beats the advancing Imesha Dulani with her guile. But Richa Ghosh misses the ball and Dulani gets back in time. The chance would not have counted because it was an over-stepped no ball. But even before the ball was declared a no ball, she had already forgiven the keeper with a smile and a ‘koi baat nai’.
The over sees Sri Lankan batsmen try to take the aerial route and at least twice the ball falls short of the fielder.
Slowdown for Sri Lanka
The wicket of Hasini Perera appears to have taken the fizz out of the Sri Lankan attack as the boundaries have dried up.
Imesha Dulani and skipper Chamari Athapaththu doing the right thing by rotating strike as much as possible.

GONE!
4th T20I Arundhati has given India a breakthrough. Hasini Perera throws away her wicket after a promising begin. She departs for 33 after trying to hit the ball out of the park, but just managing to find the fielder at long off! The bat turned in her hand and stopped the shot from getting too much distance.
