Kamalini ruled out of WPL, Vaishnavi Sharma named replacement
Mumbai
Mumbai Indians have named left-arm spinner Vaishnavi Sharma as a replacement for wicketkeeper-batter G Kamalini, who has been ruled out of the remnant of WPL 2026 with an unspecified injury.
Kamalini, 17, featured in five matches for MI in the ongoing season, managing an overall of 75 runs with a best of 32 in the tournament opener against RCB.
Vaishnavi, who will join the franchise for INR 30 lakh, arrives with growing lineage. The left-arm spinner was part of India’s title-winning squad at the ICC U19 Women’s T20 World Cup in 2025 and has since taken the next steps, making her senior international debut recently in the fifth T20Is against Sri Lanka that preceded this WPL season.
The 20-year-old Vaishnavi also recently earned a call-up to the ODI side for the tour of Australia set to commence after the WPL season.
Two-time winners Mumbai Indians are currently placed second in the WPL 2026 standings, having won two of their first five games.
Mumbai Indians (MI) will be without G Kamalini for the remainder of WPL 2026 due to an injury, the details of which have not been made public. They have brought in Vaishnavi Sharma as her replacement.
Kamalini played all five of MI’s matches in the tournament so far, where they won two and lost three, scoring 75 runs in 77 balls with a best of 32. As wicketkeeping, she had effected seven dismissals.
Unlike Kamalini, a keeper-batter,Vaishnavi is a left-arm spinner who made her international debut in the T20I series against Sri Lanka in Visakhapatnam and Thiruvananthapuram last December and picked up five wickets including a pair of two-wicket hauls. Crucially, she kept things tight in those five games, returning an overall economy rate of 6.26.
Vaishnavi had went unsold at the WPL auction, held in late November, and has now been acquired by MI for INR 30 lakh. Kamalini, meantime, had gone to MI for INR 1.60 crore after starting at a base price of INR 10 lakh. With Kamalini unavailable, MI only have Rahila Firdous, the Madhya Pradesh cricketer who is yet to play a WPL game, as their only wicket-keeping option.
MI have won the WPL twice in its three seasons but have had a patchy season so far. They are still at No. 2 on the points table behind Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), who have won all five of their matches so far. MI is joint on points with UP Warriorz (UPW) and Gujarat Giants (GG), and play their next match on Tuesday evening against Delhi Capitals (DC), who are bottom of the table at this stage.

Mumbai:
Mumbai Indians (MI) wicketkeeper-batter G Kamalini has been ruled out of the remainder of the WPL season due to an injury, with defending champions MI choosing Vaishnavi Sharma as a replacement for the remainder of the WPL 2026. Seventeen-year-old Kamalini had played 5 matches in the ongoing season before being ruled out of the season due to an injury. “Mumbai Indians (MI) picked Vaishnavi Sharma as a replacement for G Kamalini for the remnant of the Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2026. The left-arm spinner Vaishnavi, who was a member of India’s victorious ICC U19 Women’s T20 World Cup squad of 2025, has played 5 T20Is for India, scalping five wickets from the same.
MI had a shaky start to their WPL campaign, as they have managed to register just two wins in five games. Despite the last two results not quite going that way, the defending champions managed to hold onto the number two spot on the points table, thanks to their superior net run-rate.
With three league games remaining before the playoffs, MI quickly needed to get the pieces of this puzzle together when they played bottom placed Delhi Capitals at the BCA Stadium, Kotambi on Tuesday.
Notably, Kamalini and left-arm spinner Vaishnavi, both of whom were part of the T20I side that played Sri Lanka in December last year, have earned virgin ODI call-ups for the white-ball tour of Australia next month.

India will play three T20is and as many ODIs on the white-ball tour between February 15 and March 1, with the one-off Test scheduled to run from March 6 to 9 in Perth. The squad for the one-off test is yet to be named.
Mumbai:
Mumbai Indians’ campaign in the ongoing Women’s Premier League has been dealt a setback with keeper-batter G Kamalini sidelined for the remainder of the season after sustaining an injury. The defending champions have acted quickly by naming young left-arm spinner Vaishnavi Sharma as her replacement.
Kamalini had appeared in all five of Mumbai’s matches this season before being ruled out. While her returns with the bat were modest, her presence behind the stumps was a key part of the team’s balance. Retaining as an uncapped player ahead of the WPL 2026 mega-auction, Kamalini was expected to play a specialist wicketkeeping role in the side.
“Mumbai Indians (MI) picked Vaishnavi Sharma as a replacement for G Kamalini for the remainder of the TATA Women’s Premier League 2026. G Kamalini, the MI wicketkeeper-batsman, had played 5 matches in the ongoing edition of the TATA WPL before being ruled out of the season due to an injury,” MI’s statement read.
Vaishnavi’s young but effective career so far

Despite going unsold at the mega-auction, her recent performances ensured she remaining firmly on the radar.

“Vaishnavi Sharma will join MI for INR 30 Lakh. The left-arm spinner, who was a member of India’s triumphant ICC U19 Women’s T20 World Cup squad of 2025, has played 5 T20Is for India, scalping 5 wickets from the same,” it was further mentioned.
