But there is always some confusion regarding whether it is the 76th, 77th or the 78th Republic Day.

In 2026, the country will commemorate the 77th anniversary of the adoption of the Constitution, observing its 77th Republic Day with pride and patriotism, featuring a grand parade and nationwide celebrations.

‘Vixit Bharat’

Many people subtract 1950 from 2026, which gives 76, and some erroneously assume the count should be 78. However, this approach ignores the fact that 1950 is counted as the first Republic Day, not year zero. Since this means marking the day includes the starting year, 2026 correctly marks the 77th Republic Day of India.

Republic Day 2026: Significance of the 77th Republic Day


While India gained independence on August 15, 1947, it started governing itself under its own constitutional framework on January 26, 1950. It is this day that is commemorated by a spectacular Republic Day Parade on Kartavya Path near India Gate in New Delhi, watched by millions of Indians. It is the Republic of India’s birthday.

The day honors the nation’s sovereignty, democratic values, and progress, while also showcasing the impressive military formations and vibrant cultural tableaus.

Rehearsals for the 77th Republic Day parade have been underway at Kartavya Path for quite some time now, ahead of the celebrations. The Republic Day Parade will be held on January 26, 2026, whereas the Beating the Retreat Full Dress Rehearsal will take place on January 28, followed by the Beating the Retreat ceremony on January 29.

January 26 is observed as a national holiday.

Republic Day 2026: Chief guests for Republic Day celebrations
This year, the European Council President, Antonio Luis Santos da Costa, and the European Commission President, Ursula von der Leyen, will be the chief guests at the 77th Republic Day celebrations. They will also represent the EU at the 16th EU–India Summit, scheduled for January 27.

India will display its development journey, cultural diversity, and military might, including newly-raised units and mock-ups of major weapon systems deployed during  at the The President of the European Council, Antonio Costa, and the President of the European Commission, will be the chief guests at the event in the national capital.

Security has been tightened along the India-Nepal border following specific intelligence received by the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) regarding possible activities by ‘anti-national elements’ on Republic Day. Commandant Ganga Singh Udawat of the 42nd Battalion of the SSB on Sunday (January 25, 2026) told PTI that specific information had been received that ‘anti-national elements’ might carry out untoward activities on January 26.

The government will also host the annual ‘Bharat Parv’, a six-day national cultural and tourism festival, from January 26 at the Red Fort lawns as part of the Republic Day festivities, officials said on Sunday (January 25). It will be inaugurated by Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla and Union Minister for Tourism and Culture Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, the tourism ministry said.

Social Justice Ministry hosts R-Day special guests, says committed to inclusive development


The Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment on Sunday (January 25, 2026) held an interaction program with beneficiaries invited as special guests to witness the Republic Day Celebration, 2026.

The event was held at the Dr. Ambedkar National Memorial, Delhi, bringing together participants from 17 states and Union territories.

A total of 244 beneficiaries attended the program, including 151 participants under the Scheme for Economic Empowerment of DNT Communities (SEED), 42 beneficiaries under SMILE (Transgender), and 51 beneficiaries under SMILE (Beggary), a statement by the Ministry said.

The special guests were invited in recognition of their inspiring journeys and progress accomplished through the welfare schemes of the Department of Social Justice and Empowerment.

The program was chaired by the Union Minister for Social Justice and Empowerment Virendra Kumar, who interacted with the beneficiaries and heard to their experiences and success stories.
