Prime Minister Narendra Modi hosted the 16th European Union-India Summit in New Delhi with President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen and visiting President of the European Council, Antonio Costa, to announce the ‘month of all trade deals’. According to Commerce Secretary Rajesh Agrawal, India and the EU have concluded negotiations on the much-awaited Free Trade Agreement (FTA), and the announcement of the conclusion of talks will be made at the 16th India-EU Summit.

According to authorities, the signing of the deal will take place in about six months after the legal scrubbing. The deal is expected to come into effect sometime next year.

The FTA is expected to bring a qualitative change in deepening the overall bilateral ties in a range of sectors. The broader focus of today’s meeting is on trade, defense and security, climate change, critical technologies and strengthening the rules-based global order. The two sides are also set to unveil a defense framework pact and a strategic agenda. The new partnership comes at a time when Europe is seeking to reduce its reliance on the US and China and deepen its diplomatic and economic ties to other regions.

As India and the European Union (EU) move closer to finalizing a landmark free-trade agreement, Prime Minister Narendra Modi hailed the move, saying the trade accord will boost the manufacturing sector and support services between two of the largest economies. The Prime Minister noted that the India-EU trade pact is being seen as the “mother of all deals” by many across the globe and said it will create major opportunities for businesses and people on both sides.

“A landmark agreement is being signed between India and the European Union. People around the world are calling it the “mother of all deals”. This agreement brings tremendous opportunities for India’s 1.4 billion people and the millions of people in European countries,” he said while inaugurating the energy week earlier today.

PM Modi noted that the agreement is a noteworthy example of cooperation between the world’s two largest economies. He said the deal represents approximately 25 per cent of global gross domestic product (GDP) and nearly one-third of global trade.

“This strengthens our shared commitment not only to trade but also to democracy and the rule of law,” the Prime Minister said.

“The India-EU Free Trade Agreement complements the India-UK trade deal. It will boost the manufacturing sector and support services,” he added.

India and the European Union (EU) have concluded negotiations for a proposed free trade agreement (FSA) aimed at boosting two-way trade and strengthening economic ties. Both sides have described the deal–which is likely to be announced today–as balanced and forward-looking.

India and the European Union are set to elevation their long-standing strategic engagement with the signing of a Security and Defense Partnership (SDP) at the 16th India-EU Summit scheduled on Tuesday (January 27, 2026).

Commerce Secretary Rajesh Agrawal confirmed that “official-level negotiations are being concluded, and both sides are all set to announce the successful conclusion of FTA talks on January 27.” A “successful India” is in the world’s interest, said visiting European Union leaders.

The EU-India FTA conclusion marks the end of a two-decade-old process, after talks were first launched in 2007. With bilateral trade already crossing $136 billion, the sources also said that this would be “one of the biggest” bilateral deals in the world.
