77th Republic Day: U.S., India share a historic bond, says Donald Trump in message
Trump’s greetings came amid continuing tension in ties between the two countries over a range of issues, including Washington’s policies on trade and tariffs.
The United States and India share a historical bond as the world’s oldest and largest democracies, U.S. President Donald Trump said on Monday (January 26, 2026) as he greeted India on its 77th Republic Day celebrations.
Mr. Trump’s greetings came amidst continuing tension in ties between the two countries over a range of issues, including Washington’s policies on trade and tariffs.
“On behalf of the people of the United States, I extend my heartfelt congratulations to the government and people of India as you celebrate your 77th Republic Day,” the U.S. president said.
“The United States and India share a historical bond as the world’s oldest and largest democracies,” he added.
Mr. Trump’s message was put out on social media by the U.S. embassy in New Delhi.
From our close cooperation on defence, energy, critical minerals, and emerging technologies to our multi-layered engagement through the Quad, the U.S.-India relationship delivers real results for our two countries and for the Indo-Pacific region,” he said.
“I look ahead to working together to advance our shared objectives in the year ahead,” Mr. Rubio said in a statement.
U.S. ambassador to India Sergio Gor also welcomed India after attending the Republic Day celebrations at the Kartavya Path.
“Happy Republic Day, India! Honored to attend the Republic Day Parade for the first time, a celebration of India’s Constitution and democratic spirit. Thrilled to see the US-made aircraft soaring in the Indian sky, a powerful symbol of the strength of the US-India strategic partnership,” he said.
U.S.-origin transport aircraft C-130J and Apache helicopters were among the aerial platforms that featured in the parade.
The India-U.S. ties witnessed a major recession after President Donald Trump slapped a whopping 50% tariffs on Indian goods, including a 25% punitive levy on Russian oil purchases.
Both parties have held multiple rounds of negotiations last year to firm up the proposed bilateral trade deal. However, it could not be sealed yet, largely in view of Washington’s demands to open up India’s farm and dairy sectors.

Aside from the tariff issue, the relations came under strain on a number of other issues that included U.S. President Donald Trump’s claim of ending the India-Pakistan conflict in May last year and Washington’s new immigration policy.
Despite ongoing trade disputes and policy differences, the United States and India continue to maintain a historic partnership, as highlighted by US leaders on India’s 77th Republic Day. The celebrations underlined the enduring strategic and democratic ties between the two nations.
Even as trade disputes and policy differences continue to strain bilateral ties, United States President Donald Trump on Monday described India and the US as partners bound by a “historic bond” while extending greetings on the occasion of India’s 77th Republic Day.
Trump’s message, shared by the US embassy in New Delhi, came at a time when relations between the two countries have faced turmoil over tariffs, immigration and strategic disagreements.
On behalf of the people of the United States, I extend my heartfelt greetings to the government and people of India as you celebrate your 77th Republic Day,” Trump said.

RUBIO EMPHASISES STRATEGIC COOPERATION
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio also conveyed congratulations, pointing to expanding cooperation across key sectors.
“From our close collaboration on defense, energy, critical minerals, and emerging technologies to our multi-layered engagement through the Quad, the US–India relationship delivers real results for our two countries and for the Indo-Pacific region,” Rubio said.
“I look ahead to working together to advance our shared objectives in the year ahead,” he added.
Rubio’s comments underlined Washington’s focus on strengthening security and economic ties with New Delhi despite ongoing differences.
US AMBASSADOR AT KARTAVYA PATH
US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor attended the Republic Day festivities at Kartavya Path and described the experience as a symbol of the strength of bilateral ties.

“Happy Republic Day, India! Honored to attend the Republic Day Parade for the first time, a celebration of India’s Constitution and democratic spirit,” Gor said.
“Thrilled to see the US-made aircraft soaring in the Indian sky, a powerful symbol of the strength of the US-India strategic partnership,” he added.

TRADE AND TARIFF TENSIONS
The Republic Day greetings came against the backdrop of a major downturn in ties after the Trump administration imposed tariffs of up to 50 percent on Indian goods, including a 25 percent punitive levy linked to India’s purchases of Russian oil.
The measures triggered strong reactions in New Delhi and disrupted trade flows between the two nations.
Both sides held several rounds of negotiations last year to finalize a proposed bilateral trade deal. However, talks failed to produce a breakthrough, largely due to Washington’s demand for greater access to India’s farm and dairy sectors.
Apart from trade disputes, relations have faced pressure over multiple issues, including Trump’s claim of having ended the India-Pakistan conflict in May last year and Washington’s revised immigration policies affecting skilled Indian workers.
Diplomatic sources said these differences have complicated attempts to reset ties despite strong engagement at the strategic and defense levels.
