An Army vehicle skidded off the road and plunged into a deep gorge in Doda district of Jammu and Kashmir on Thursday (January 22, 2026), killing 10 troops and injuring 11 others, officials said.

The accident took place at the 9,000-feet-high Khanni top along the Bhaderwah-Chamba interstate road around afternoon when the driver of a bulletproof Army vehicle heading towards a high-altitude post lost control and the vehicle plunged into a 200-foot-deep gorge.

A joint rescue operation by Army and police was launched immediately and four of the soldiers were found dead on the spot and 11 others were rescued in an injured condition, the officials said. The Army vehicle was badly mangled.

Later, six more injured soldiers died of injuries.

One of the injured is under observation in Bhaderwah sub-district hospital while 10 soldiers were airlifted to Udhampur command hospital for specialized treatment.

“We have lost 10 soldiers with 11 others injured in the unfortunate accident involving army vehicle,” Additional Deputy Commissioner, Bhaderwah, Sumit Kumar Bhutyal told PTI.

Lt. Governor Manoj Sinha and Chief Minister Omar Abdullah have expressed sorrow over the accident.

The Chief Minister transmitted heartfelt condolences to the families of the soldiers who lost their lives and wished a speedy recovery to those injured. He also praised the swift rescue and evacuation efforts.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said he was “deeply saddened by the tragic road accident in Doda. He wrote on X, “… My heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families. The injured soldiers are receiving medical care and all necessary directions have been given to ensure the best possible treatment. The nation stands with our Armed Forces and their families in this difficult hour.”

“In this moment of profound sadness, the entire nation stands united with the bereaved families in solidarity and support. 10 injured soldiers have been airlifted to the hospital,” he said, adding that he had directed senior officials to ensure best possible treatment to the injured.

“Praying for their speedy recovery,” he said.

Mr. Sinha, in a post on X, said he was “deeply saddened at the loss of lives of 10 of our brave Indian Army soldiers in an unfortunate road accident in Doda. We will always remember the outstanding service and supreme sacrifice of our brave soldiers.” He expressed his deepest condolences to the grieving families.

“In an unfortunate incident, an Army vehicle carrying troops for an operation, slipped off the road while navigating treacherous terrain in bad weather, in general area of Doda. Ten Army personnel were killed and 11 others were injured after their armored vehicle skidded off the road and plunged into a 200 ft gorge in Jammu and Kashmir’s Doda district on Thursday.

According to the Army’s Jammu-based White Knight Corps, an Army vehicle carrying troops for an operation slipped off the road while navigating treacherous terrain in bad weather in the general area of Doda.

Officials said the armored vehicle, carrying 21 personnel, met with the accident at the 9000-foot-high Khanni Top along the Bhaderwah–Chamba road.

Immediately after the crash, a rescue operation was launched by the Army, police and local residents to evacuate the injured soldiers.

Official sources said 10 soldiers were killed, while 11 others were rescued and transferred to a nearby hospital.

They added that some of the critically wounded soldiers were airlifted to the Udhampur military hospital for specialized treatment.

The Army vehicle was badly mangled after plunging down.

Senior civil and military officials hurried to the accident site to take stock of the situation.

The accident occurred amid heightened security measures by security agencies and the administration to ensure the peaceful and smooth conduct of Republic Day functions across the Union Territory.
